A hidden gem in the Surrey Hills

Just half an hour outside London lies a tranquil, rural retreat where birdsong, countryside strolls and cocktails by the fire are the order of the day. The Luxury Report checks into Kingsley House

Nestled in the picturesque Surrey Hills, Kingsley House is tailor-made for those looking for a break from the stresses of city life. This adult-only B&B feels more like a boutique hotel and, with its splendid grounds, is blissfully detached from the world beyond. Kingsley House is all about fresh air, great walks and cosy nights by the fire.

The day begins with freshly brewed Brazilian coffee brought to your room, followed by breakfast in the dining room. It starts with a spread of fruit, yoghurt, granola and juice, before your host Craig cooks up either a full English or a lighter plate of wild mushrooms on sourdough. For vegetarians or specific diets, nothing is too much trouble.

After breakfast, it’s time to put on your walking boots and head out to explore. Owners of Kingsley House Duncan and Craig know the area inside and out and are full of suggestions, including the nearby Devil’s Punch Bowl, with its expansive views across the South Downs. Expect to find afternoon tea waiting for you when you return. Think warm scones, a pot of Earl Grey and home-baked cake, served either in the garden or by the fire, depending on the weather.

There are just three guest rooms boasting luxurious beds, a choice of pillows and duvet weights, lovely linen, and thoughtful extras like turn-down service with Bendicks mints and macarons. At night, with just the sound of the wind in the trees and the occasional hoot of an owl, you’ll soon drift off into a blissful sleep.

Dinner is at a relaxed time to suit you. Craig heads back to the kitchen to cook for guests who’ve opted in – the food is seasonal, local and unfussy, and very well done. Drinks are served beforehand in the drawing room or garden, and after dinner, there’s the option of a glass of wine by the fire or a digestif from the house bar.

The nearby market town of Haslemere is handy for shopping and home to a host of great pubs and restaurants. Up there with the very best is The Duke of Cumberland in the nearby hamlet of Henley. Run by chef Simon Goodman, The Duke serves restaurant-quality food and cask ales. Try wild garlic mushroom, toasted bruschetta with fried quail’s egg and truffle oil, followed by a venison burger with paprika onions, spicy cheese, and smoked mayonnaise – all washed down with a hearty burgundy from the impressive cellar.

Indeed, this part of the world does pubs especially well, with other notable watering holes including The Noah’s Ark in Lurgashall, The Crown, and The Mulberry Inn, both in nearby Chiddingfold.

Kingsley House for great days out

Beyond the tranquil trails, there is much to see and do near Kingsley House – and if you want to combine a rural retreat with something extra, then The Goodwood Festival of Speed could be just the ticket. Famously known as ‘the world’s largest automotive garden party’, this annual four-day event takes place from 9-12 July outside nearby Chichester and combines all things motoring with terrific hospitality. If you want to indulge, then leave the car at Kingsley House and take a train from Haslemere to Chichester, where a dedicated shuttle bus will deliver you to the heart of the action. Alternatively, let your hosts organise a car for you directly from Kingsley House.

Wine lovers have much to savour in the region. You’ll notice that the area’s outstanding restaurants and pubs boast a range of English sparkling wines, showcasing just how far the product has come over the last thirty years. So, if you want to sample some more, then you’re in the right place. About 20 minutes away, The Greyfriars Vineyard in Puttenham does an amazing tour, while just outside of Chichester is the Tinwood Estate, and the Upperton Vineyard in Tillington. Combine a visit to The Greyfriars Vineyard with lunch in nearby Guildford and a visit to the town’s spectacular Norman castle.

Other historic towns nearby include Arundel, about 40 minutes from Haslemere, which is one for history lovers and nature enthusiasts. Arundel Castle boasts a finely preserved interior and fascinating furniture, including tapestries and a rare collection of paintings by renowned artists such as Van Dyck, Gainsborough, and Canaletto, as well as beautiful gardens. Arundel is also home to a fascinating WWT Wetland Centre, where, among a host of beautiful ducks and waders, a mesmerising ‘scoop’ of Dalmatian pelicans is worth the entrance fee alone.

Homely warmth, hotel comfort

Kingsley House isn’t the kind of place that needs to impress – it happens naturally. Afternoons can drift by in the garden with a good book, or in the drawing room with the fire lit and a glass of something from the drinks menu (they’re fully licensed). It’s a place to rest, read, walk, and eat well.

Your fabulous hosts Duncan and Craig attend to every detail, including travel arrangements and visits to local attractions and events. You’ll also notice their love of interior design – the decor is stunning throughout the property, with floor-to-ceiling windows that let natural light flood in, celebrating the grounds beyond.

Be sure to say hi to Kingsley House’s beautiful dog, Hudson. A Harlequin Great Dane, Hudson, is due to appear in an upcoming Disney+ British drama series – so you’ll be in the presence of a star!

Kingsley House is a special place indeed. With just three bedrooms, this is a boutique experience, a hidden gem to embrace calm and tranquillity, with the comfort of fine dining, history and excitement right on your doorstep.
