Where wellbeing meets the wild beauty of the Lakes

At Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa, Donna Richardson discovers a retreat where award-winning wellness, sweeping views across Windermere and the restorative power of nature invite guests to slow down and switch off

Sometimes, the best kind of escape is one that encourages you to slow down, switch off and simply breathe. Nestled on the shores of Lake Windermere, Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa offers exactly that – a chance to reconnect with nature, recharge body and mind and embrace a slower pace of life.

After a long journey north, my partner and I arrived feeling tired and in need of a reset. Within minutes of checking in, we had exchanged the stresses of everyday life for fluffy robes, welcome drinks and the promise of an afternoon devoted entirely to relaxation.

As I eased myself into the outdoor thermal pool, overlooking England’s largest lake, I could feel the tension melting away. Mist drifted across the water, while the surrounding fells were painted in soft shades of green and charcoal beneath a sky streaked with peach and gold. It wasn’t the weather that made the moment special, but the stillness. There is something about being close to water that instantly calms the mind.

Spectacular serenity

Our base for the weekend was one of the luxurious Winander Club Oak Suites, and stepping inside felt more like entering a private lakeside retreat than a hotel room. Decorated in soothing neutral tones with floor-to-ceiling windows framing spectacular views, it was impossible not to relax.

The spacious bathroom quickly became one of my favourite spots. A deep soaking tub, ESPA bath salts and fluffy robes transformed evening baths into indulgent self-care rituals, while thoughtful touches such as complimentary soft drinks and binoculars added to the sense of luxury.

Mornings began slowly. Wrapped in a robe with a cup of tea in hand, I sat on the balcony watching sailing boats glide across the lake while the ever-changing Cumbrian skies put on their own spectacular display. Breakfast in the exclusive Winander Club lounge was equally memorable, with fresh pastries, locally sourced produce and panoramic views making it hard to rush through the morning.

While the accommodation is beautiful, the spa is undoubtedly the heart of Low Wood Bay. Recently voted the Best Spa in the North West by the Good Spa Guide, the adults-only thermal journey has been designed to help guests slow down and unwind. The experience includes bubbling outdoor hot tubs, lake-view saunas, aromatic steam rooms and heated relaxation lounges, all perfectly positioned to make the most of the breathtaking surroundings.

Moving between indoor and outdoor spaces felt wonderfully restorative. The contrast between the crisp Lake District air and the warmth of the pools was invigorating, while views across Windermere towards the fells created a sense of complete tranquillity.

Between dips, we relaxed with herbal teas and healthy snacks before retreating to the relaxation rooms, where the pace of life seemed to slow even further.

On cloud nine

No wellness break would be complete without a treatment, and our couples’ massage proved to be one of the highlights of the trip. We opted for Berry and Birch: A Walk in the Clouds, inspired by the surrounding landscape. The treatment began with firm movements to release tension before flowing into slower, restorative techniques that left me feeling completely relaxed. For 50 blissful minutes, I drifted into a state of pure calm. By the end, both body and mind felt lighter, reminding me just how rarely we allow ourselves to truly switch off.

Nourishing body and soul

Good food plays an important role in any wellness escape, and Low Wood Bay offers plenty of options. Blue Smoke provided the perfect setting for a relaxed evening meal. Sustainable British woods, including oak and birch, infuse dishes with delicious smoky flavours, while the atmosphere is warm and informal. I chose lamb chops with fluffy triple-cooked chips, while my partner opted for fillet steak. Enjoyed with a glass of red wine, it was the perfect way to round off a day spent unwinding.

Meanwhile, The W restaurant offers a more refined experience, where floor-to-ceiling windows frame the ever-changing beauty of Windermere. Seasonal British ingredients take centre stage, and sunset views across the lake provide an unforgettable backdrop.

For lighter bites, coffee and cake, Norman’s in the Atrium offers cosy corners and open fire pits that make it easy to while away an afternoon between spa sessions.

Art, nature and slowing down

What makes Low Wood Bay feel so special isn’t just the luxury. It’s the way everything works together. The spa, the food, the accommodation and the spectacular scenery all feel deeply connected to the landscape.

The Lake District has long been a destination associated with restoration. Poets, painters and dreamers have found inspiration here for centuries, and there’s something wonderfully grounding about simply sitting by the water and allowing nature to do its thing.

As I slipped into the outdoor thermal pool one final time on our last morning, I watched the early sun illuminate Windermere and the surrounding peaks. In that moment, everything felt peaceful.

Some wellness retreats impress you while you’re there. The truly special ones stay with you long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase.

Rooms start from £186 per night, including breakfast. Spa access for resident guests starts from £75 per person for a three-hour thermal journey. Head here to the English Lakes Hotels website to book.
