Inspired by its wild and beautiful location, The Tongsai Bay has created a tropical haven for guests to rediscover their best selves
Around the world, hotels and resorts are being encouraged to be more environmentally conscious and aware of their sustainability practices. The Tongsai Bay on the island of Koh Samui is a true Thai hospitality pioneer, and has been leading the way by implementing green policies since its establishment in 1987.
The Tongsai Bay was the first 5-star hotel to be built on the island and is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Back in the 1980s the resort’s founder, the late Khun Akorn Hoontrakul, fell in love with the location and spent three months sleeping on the beach dreaming about how to build the perfect resort without damaging the environment. His passion for the rich flora, fauna and luscious environment is honoured to this day and has been celebrated at numerous award ceremonies.
Covering more than 28 acres, The Tongsai Bay is a haven of tranquillity and privacy. Home to over 60 kinds of birds and animals, including slow loris, monitor lizards, butterflies, snakes and tree shrews, The Tongsai Bay is committed to creating a peaceful atmosphere and limiting disruption to the wildfire. The result is truly a relaxing sanctuary of sea, sun and nature. The luxurious resort has a 200 metre secluded beach that offers only non-motorised water-sports to ensure the tranquillity is maintained. The Tongsai Bay offers a host of complimentary aqua activities, such as hobie cats, kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling. Limiting noise pollution beneath the glistening waves protects the glorious shoals of fish and diverse marine life that calls the bay home.
The natural way
The Tongsai Bay is carefully designed to maximise space for each guest, making the most of the glorious, panoramic views. Each of the 81 suites and villas have spacious balconies and terraces allowing guests to take absorb their stunning surroundings in complete privacy. Relaxing in the outdoor bath and gazing up at the twinkling night sky is one of the many unforgettable ways to enjoy an evening at The Tongsai Bay. There are also cooking classes where guests can learn to cook traditional Thai dishes, fruit carving sessions, Thai language classes and movie nights on the beach beneath the stars.
The Tongsai Bay has been thoughtfully designed as an oasis of calm and sanctuary for both the wildlife and guests. This incredible dedication to the natural world is admirable. It ensures guests can be at one with their surroundings knowing that they are left to flourish of their own accord.

Good for you, good for the planet
Being immersed in nature lowers stress levels and improve mood and The Tongsai Bay recognises the precious gifts their surroundings hold. “The core philosophy of The Tongsai Bay is focussed on reducing waste, recycling, redesigning and reusing” explains Khun Thanakorn Hoontrakul, the owner of The Tongsai Bay and son of the founder. This ethos helps the hotel keep its ecological promise of minimising damage to the environment, whilst delivering cost benefits. For instance, citrus fruit is a key ingredient in Thai cuisine, particularly Kaffir limes. Not only do limes enhance the delicious flavour of the dishes, but they also have a secondary use elsewhere in the hotel – the high levels of citric acid makes them the perfect base for cleaning products. The Tongsai Bay uses discarded citrus peels to make biodegradable cleaner, not only does this mean the hotel saves money from purchasing mass-produced cleaning products, but it also minimises the use of chemicals that may potentially leech into the soil and harm the environment.
Back to being you
