42, London’s Exclusive New Bar from Gymkhana

42, The Exclusive Cocktail Lounge, Part of London Mayfair’s Gymkhana

In 2023, London restaurant group JKS opened 42, a cocktail lounge located above Gymkhana, their two Michelin-Starred restaurant renowned for its classic Indian flavours. Established in 2008 by siblings Jyotin, Karam, and Sunaina Sethi, JKS Restaurants boasts a portfolio of distinguished restaurant brands across London. 42 is JKS’ first foray into bars, bringing a new premium drinking experience to Mayfair with a cocktail list showcasing Indian ingredients and nostalgic Indian flavours.

Echoing the nature of Gymkhana clubs, the elite clubs of India frequented by members of high society, 42 further recreates the intimate ambience of these private gatherings. Guests at 42 will be welcomed into the Mayfair townhouse through its street entrance and led up the staircase into the lounge. The interiors have been designed by North End Design and Karam Sethi to blend India’s rich architectural legacy with modern aesthetics. From floor to ceiling is a layered collection of Indian fabrics and embroidered textiles; a striking contrast to the specially commissioned paintings, hand-carved oak bar and ornate furnishings.

The cocktail lounge’s menu is a continuation of the influences and quality showcased at Gymkhana, and features house cocktails as well as a selection of elevated classics. Heading up the house cocktails is the Bagheera, made with Lost Explorer Espadin mezcal, Chaprah weaver ant chutney, lime juice, and banasura peppercorn. The ant chutney was discovered during the Gymkhana menu development process, and with its spicy, bright and aromatic flavour profile, lends itself ideally to 42’s play on a classic margarita. Other house cocktails include the Ganda Martini, with vodka, olive vermouth, and olive brine papad, and the Mr Ilyas, with a blend of The Macallan, Double Cask 12 Years Old, peanut butter, and coconut.

The Club’s Classics section see 42’s take on the Lychee Martini, enhanced with a kick of timu peppercorn, and on the classic Penicillin. The spirits list itself includes well-loved luxury brands for those who seek familiarity but also includes some smaller and lesser-known for the discerning drinkers, looking to explore and discover more. Guests can also choose from a list of vintage and non-vintage Champagne with a carefully chosen selection also available by the glass.
