Mount Irvine Bay Resort offers a spectacularly memorable year-round vacation for both the discerning traveller and the avid golfer. The resort features one of the most unique golfing experiences in Tobago and the Caribbean, thanks to its award-winning 18-hole golf course, which is carved out from 127 acres of an old sugar and coconut estate. Designed by Commander John D. Harris and established in 1968, the course is set within gently rolling countryside along Tobago’s north-west coastline, and features an abundance of towering coconut trees and breathtaking views of the sparkling Caribbean sea from every hole.
In 1969, the Mount Irvine Golf Course was selected as a venue to host one of the tournaments in the film and television series, ‘Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf,’ and it has also hosted the Johnnie Walker International Pro-Am. In 1994, the resort and golf club received the honour of being named Caribbean Golf Resort by ‘Lifestyle and Travel Magazine’ in association with ‘Travel Weekly’ magazine. Recent facility upgrades to the hotel over the past couple of years have led to additional accolades – World Golf Awards voted Mount Irvine Bay Resort’s course ‘Best Golf Course’ in Tobago for 2015 and 2016.
Mount Irvine’s features include a par course that is 6,793 yards from the back tees, with five par-5s ranging in distance from an easy 466 yards to a testing 535 yards. There are eight par-4s and five par 3s. No. 7 is 186 yards, which challenges with water on the left of the greens and out of bounds on the right – water comes into play on four of the holes.
The men’s course record is 65, held by British pro, Roger Chapman; the ladies’ record is 69, held by Julie Greenhalgh.
Guests of Mount Irvine who’d like to play a few rounds will receive a 15% discount on green fees. In addition, the resort offers rental of golf clubs and other equipment, and will provide caddies and carts, on request.
And, at the end of a long day of golfing, the course offers up one last treat – you can sit and have a drink at the Golf Club Bar, located just off the terrace overlooking the 18th hole. There, evening cocktails are served up along with stunning sunsets to bring to a close the most enjoyable and rewarding of days.
